What Is the Webster Technique? A Guide for Expecting Moms

An honest, complete explanation of one of pregnancy chiropractic's most talked-about — and most misunderstood — techniques.

If you've done any research on chiropractic care during pregnancy, you've almost certainly encountered the term "Webster Technique." It's frequently mentioned in pregnancy forums, recommended by midwives, and sought out by expecting moms — especially in the third trimester. But there's a lot of confusion about what the Webster Technique actually does. This guide gives you the straight story.

Who Developed the Webster Technique?

The Webster Technique was developed by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). Dr. Webster created the technique after observing that sacral misalignment in pregnant patients was associated with difficulty during labor and delivery. The ICPA has since trained thousands of chiropractors worldwide in this specific analysis and adjustment protocol, and it remains the gold standard for chiropractic care during pregnancy.

What the Webster Technique Actually Does

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic sacral analysis and adjustment. It focuses on two interconnected issues that are common in pregnancy:

By restoring proper sacral alignment and releasing tension in the associated muscles and ligaments, Webster care aims to optimize pelvic balance and reduce intrauterine constraint. This creates a more balanced uterine environment, which may support baby's ability to move into optimal positioning on their own.

What the Webster Technique Does NOT Do

This is important — please read carefully.

The Webster Technique does not turn, flip, reposition, or manipulate babies. It is not a treatment for breech presentation. Chiropractors do not touch the baby or directly influence fetal position during a Webster adjustment.

What it does is work on your pelvis — restoring alignment and reducing muscular and ligamentous tension — which may create conditions that allow your baby more freedom to move. Whether or how a baby repositions is determined by many factors and is never guaranteed. Always consult your OB or midwife about fetal positioning.

Unfortunately, Webster Technique is sometimes marketed with language that implies it "fixes" breech babies or "turns" babies head-down. This is inaccurate and misleading. We believe in honest, evidence-based communication — and that means being clear about what this technique can and cannot do.

Who Should Consider Webster Technique Care?

The Webster Technique is appropriate for pregnant women throughout all three trimesters — not just those with breech babies. It is particularly beneficial for women experiencing:

Many women begin Webster care in the second trimester as a proactive measure to maintain pelvic balance as their bodies change — not because anything is "wrong."

What a Webster Adjustment Feels Like

A Webster adjustment is gentle and comfortable. You'll typically be positioned on your side or on a specially designed drop table. The adjustment itself involves a light, precise thrust to the sacrum and soft-tissue work on the uterine ligaments. Most patients describe it as a feeling of release and immediate relief — not the dramatic "crack" that many people associate with chiropractic.

Sessions typically take 15–20 minutes for established patients. At your first visit, you'll receive a complete evaluation and care plan before any adjustments are performed.

Finding a Certified Webster Practitioner

Webster Technique certification requires specific training through the ICPA. When choosing a prenatal chiropractor, always ask whether they hold active ICPA Webster certification. All practitioners at Prenatal Chiropractic Southeast are Webster certified and receive ongoing continuing education in prenatal and pediatric chiropractic care.
