What every expecting mom should know about prenatal chiropractic — benefits, techniques, and precautions.
If you're pregnant and dealing with back pain, sciatica, or hip discomfort, you've probably wondered: is chiropractic care actually safe during pregnancy? The short answer is yes — but let's go deeper, because you deserve more than a one-word answer.
The American Pregnancy Association recognizes chiropractic care as a safe and effective option throughout pregnancy. Multiple studies have found that chiropractic adjustments carry a very low risk profile for pregnant women when performed by a trained practitioner. A 2014 review published in Chiropractic & Manual Therapies concluded that adverse events from chiropractic care in pregnancy are rare, and that the benefits — including reduced back pain, improved pelvic function, and shorter labor — are well-documented.
The key phrase there is "trained practitioner." Prenatal chiropractic requires specific knowledge of pregnancy anatomy, appropriate patient positioning, and technique modifications. Not every chiropractor has this training. At Prenatal Chiropractic Southeast, all of our providers are certified in the Webster Technique through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), which requires specialized training in pregnancy and pediatric care.
A prenatal chiropractic visit looks and feels very different from a standard adjustment. Here's what we do differently:
While prenatal chiropractic is safe for the vast majority of pregnant women, there are certain conditions where you should get clearance from your OB-GYN or midwife before starting care. These include:
At your first visit, we conduct a thorough intake assessment and review your pregnancy history. If we identify any reason to consult with your care team first, we'll let you know right away. We always work collaboratively with your OB or midwife — not in isolation from them.
Many women assume chiropractic care is only helpful in the third trimester when discomfort peaks. In reality, starting earlier often produces better outcomes. Here's why each trimester matters:
Prenatal chiropractic care is not only safe — for most pregnant women, it's one of the most effective drug-free options available for managing the physical demands of pregnancy. The key is working with a provider who has specific prenatal training and takes an evidence-based, collaborative approach to your care.
